Neighbours

Here are our new neighbours, across the back fence:

Cows_1

Nice enough folk, not very chatty though. This is taken from the back deck, but with a 12x/432mm zoom lens, so they aren’t really that close; but on the other hand, there’s nothing preventing them from walking on over to our back yard, if they wanted to.

Day 50

Sheathing on roof, so now you can see the final shape. Front, from street:

Rear, from back yard:

The posts holding up the roof over the deck and porch are temporary; real beams are being built.

Next steps: soffits/trim around roof, then roofing shingles/etc. so the inside keeps dry in case of rain.

Dewey Bridge

Dewey Bridge was built in 1916; it was one of the first bridges to cross the Colorado River. Until it burned down in 2008, it was the longest suspension bridge in Utah. The bridge is all iron… except for the wooden deck, which burned because of a child playing with matches.

Still looks in better shape than the Champlain Bridge. And yes, it’s cold enough to have the river partially ice over. I doubt it ever freezes completely – those ice chunks are moving downstream very quickly.

Happy New Year!  Bonne Année明けましておめでとうございます

Day 46

It’s a roof! Or, at least the beginnings of one – trusses installed:

And yes, it did snow yesterday, maybe an inch…. mostly gone already. Makes the canyon walls look pretty; but also makes the ground muddy.

The kitchen/dining/living area will have a vaulted ceiling – you can see it here:

Mill Creek

There are several creeks running through the valley, sending the rainfall and snowmelt from the mountains down to the Colorado river. This is a waterfall on Mill Creek, a short walk from town; there used to be an electrical generating station here, long since gone.
